1. Choose Your Pathway
Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
Basic knowledge and lifesaving interventions while awaiting additional EMS response. Prerequisite: CPR Certification.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
The standard entry-level certification for basic, non-invasive life-saving interventions. Prerequisite: High School Diploma & CPR.
Advanced EMT (AEMT)
Provides basic and limited advanced care, including IV therapy and certain medications. Prerequisite: Current EMT Certification.
Paramedic
The highest level of pre-hospital care, providing advanced life support and cardiology. Prerequisite: EMT/AEMT & College A&P.

Search Courses3. First-Time Licensure Checklist
If you have never been licensed in Utah, follow these mandatory steps to secure your official EMS certification.

Step 1: Complete an Approved Course
Successfully complete your EMR, EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic program through a state-approved Training Center.

Step 2: Submit Application & Pay Fees
Create an account in the EMS Licensing Portal and pay the required application fees. Note: Fees must be paid to receive your fingerprint form.

Step 3: Submit DACS Fingerprints
Pass a mandatory criminal background check by submitting your fingerprints through the Direct Access Clearance System (DACS). This is a one-time requirement.

Step 4: Pass the NREMT Exam
Successfully complete and pass the cognitive and psychomotor exams administered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).
